Background and Overview
The 4th International Workshop on Structural Control (4IWSC) will be held June 10-11, 2004 at Columbia University in New York. The International Workshop on Structural Control, organized by the International Association on Structural Control (IASC), is held every 4 years, and is staggered by two years from each of the World Conferences on Structural Control. The first workshop was held in 1993 in Honolulu, the second in 1996 in Hong Kong and the third in Paris in 2000. The workshops are typically smaller than the world conferences, and in fact, serve as a focused forum to chart new directions in the field.

(Note: The 4IWSC workshop date falls on the two days preceeding the 17th ASCE Engineering Mechanics Conference (EM2004) hosted at University of Delaware. The Univ. of Delaware is a 1 1/2 train-ride from New York City.)

Objectives for the 4IWSC
First and foremost, a major effort will be made to create a true workshop atmosphere rather than simply another mini-conference with a series of presentations alone. The two-day schedule will include a block of ‘keynote’ lectures each day, which focus on major research trends and applications of structural control and structural monitoring technologies, and a particular focus will be given to new sensors and sensor networks, together with the integration of the sensed data for large-scale model-based simulation.

Because this is not a mini-conference but rather a true working workshop, there is no call for paper submission. There will, however, be an opportunity for researchers to present very brief
(on the order of 5 minutes) summaries of work during the Working Group sessions.  Such presenters may also submit, at the time of the Workshop, an extended summary of their Working Group presentation, subject to a 6-page limit.

Accomodations
Dormitory-style housing will be available for the workshop on the Columbia University campus. All rooms are air-conditioned. Most rooms share their bathroom with another room in a suite configuration. The room rates vary between about $50-80 per night depending on whether it is a single or double.

A block of hotel accomodations has been reserved at three New York hotels. Room rates are approximately $110-$175 per night. These hotels are within a 10-15 minute taxi or subway ride to Columbia University's main campus.

Registration
Registration is open, and the registration fee is $200. This will cover all sessions, the proceedings, lunch, coffee breaks and a banquet dinner.
