10/18/2006

On Wednesday evening, October 18, 2006, Morton B. Friedman celebrated his 50th Anniversary with Columbia University.

He began his career at the University in 1956 as an assistant professor in the Department of Civil Engineering and Engineering Mechanics and a member of the department's Guggenheim Insitute for Flight Structures. In 1978, The Society of Columbia Graduates presented him their Great Teacher Award. He was appointed as department chair in 1981 and was promoted to vice dean of The Fu Foundation School of Engineering and Applied Science in 1995. He significantly revised the undergraduate engineering curriculum, placing a greater emphasis on project-based learning, a solid liberal arts foundation, and research opportunities with faculty. The Department of Civil Engineering and Engineering Mechanics would like to thank him for all the wonderful contributions he has made over his long and successful career here at Columbia.
