10/10/2008

George Z. Voyiadjis, Chair and Boyd Professor in LSU's Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering, is the recipient of the prestigious Nathan M. Newmark Medal for 2008 of the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE).  Voyiadjis graduated from Columbia in 1973 and worked under Prof. Maciej Bieniek during his Civil Engineering and Engineering Mechanics studies at Columbia.

The Newmark Medal is a national medal given to an ASCE member who, through contributions in structural mechanics, has helped to substantially strengthen the scientific base of structural engineering.  George was selected to receive this honor in recognition of his outstanding contributions to the fields of structural mechanics and goemechanics, his fundamental research in constitutive modeling and characterization of damage mechanisms in metals, composites and soils, and his pioneering contributions in multi-scale modeling and localization problems.

Voyiadjis' has over 200 journal articles and 16 books (eight as editor) to his credit.  Over fifty graduate students completed their degrees under his direction.  Voyiadjis has secured more than $10 million in research funds as a principal investigator from the National Science Foundation, the Department of Defense, the Air Force Office of Scientific Research, the Department of Transportation and major companies such as IBM, and Martin Marietta.  We congratulate him on his many career achievements and, in particular, his prestigious ASCE Newmark Medal award.
