06/01/2008

Associate Professor Andrew W. Smyth of the Department of Civil Engineering and Engineering Mechanics has been awarded one of the prestigious 2008 Walter L. Huber Civil Engineering Research Prizes of the American Society of Civil Engineers. The award recognizes notable achievements by younger faculty members in research related to civil engineering. Professor Smyth received the award at the Inaugural International Conference of the Engineering Mechanics Institute at the University of Minnesota in Minneapolis in May.

Professor Smyth was recognized "for fundamental contributions in the highly efficient identification and modeling of nonlinear deteriorating structural dynamics." The selection committee commented that his research is characterized by "thoroughness, novelty, relevance, and intelligent breakthroughs."

Dr. Smyth's research interests include structural dynamics, structural health monitoring and control, nonlinear system identification, and random vibrations. He has numerous publications, honors and awards. He contributes greatly to ASCE and other societies through his leadership in committees and conferences, and as an editor and reviewer for technical journals.
