Assistant Professor John Taylor Wins Best Journal Paper Award for 2007 in ASCE Journal

11/13/2008

John E. Taylor, Assistant Professor in the Department of Civil Engineering and Engineering Mechanics, won the Best Journal Paper Award for 2007 by the Editorial Board of the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) Journal of Construction Engineering and Management.  The selection committee chose Dr. Taylor’s manuscript from among the approximately 130 manuscripts published in 2007 due to the “anticipated impact of these findings” which “allow researchers and practitioners to better understand the slow adoption rate of 3D CAD in the architecture, engineering, and construction industry.”

The title of the manuscript that won the Best Journal Paper Award is “Exploring the antecedents of successful 3D CAD implementation in design and construction networks.”  The Best Journal Paper Award for 2007 was presented by Dr. Charles T. Jahren, Editor-in-Chief of the ASCE Journal of Construction Engineering and Management, at the ASCE Annual Civil Engineering Conference in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania on November 8, 2008.

Dr. Taylor’s research at Columbia combines in-depth field research, experimentation, and computational simulation modeling to examine project network dynamics in the global architecture, engineering, and construction industry.  The paper selected for the Best Journal Paper Award for 2007 was based on Dr. Taylor’s examination of the cross-organizational dynamics impacting parametric 3D CAD modeling tool implementation.  Dr. Taylor’s current research focuses on: (1) complex exchanges within global, cross-cultural design networks (supported by National Science Foundation and Construction Industry Institute grants) and (2) the impact of building occupant network structures on inducing energy efficient behavior (supported by an Earth Institute grant).
