Professor Xi Chen Receives NSF CAREER Award
03/01/2007
Associate professor Xi Chen has received a NSF CAREER Award, for his
proposal "The science underpinning mechanical self-assembly." In this
proposal, Professor Chen proposes to utilize controlled failure in thin
films (buckling, cracking, and delamination) to self-assemble ordered
patterns for micro and nanofabrication, with applications to
nanoelectronics and biology.
This is one of the examples of the new research frontiers Professor Chen
has established since he joined CEEM in 2003. His other research frontiers
include molecular biomechanics, nanoscale energetics, nanomechanics of
nanotubes and nanostructures, nanoindentation, micromechanics of small
material structures, and solid-fluid interactions. See his
Web page for more details.
