Prof. Mourad Zeghal

Prof. Mourad Zeghal is an Associate Professor in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute. Previously, he was a senior engineer and leader of the geohazard group at Aon Risk Technologies. In 1999, he received a National Science Foundation Career Award. Zeghal is member of the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE), the Network for Earthquake Engineering Simulation (NEES), and the Consortium of Universities for Research in Earthquake Engineering (CUREE).

Zeghal is involved with a number of geotechnical earthquake engineering problems related to soil liquefaction and ground failure. These are two major causes of earthquake damage with a cost in the billions of dollars. Zeghal’s research has focused on modeling, simulation and analysis of the seismic response of geosystems based on system identification of laboratory and field data, as well as micro-mechanical approaches. These efforts are multidisciplinary in nature and draw upon the fields of geotechnology, engineering mechanics, data mining, systems identification, and information technology. In addition to IPRP, Zeghal is, in this regard, actively involved with the Center for Network for Earthquake Engineering Simulation (CEES) and Scientific Computation Research Center (SCOREC).
