Machine Shop Renovation Under Way

After years of heavy wear, the Carleton Lab machine shop is undergoing a much-needed and deserved heavy overhaul and renovation. By the estimated completion of the project at the end of December 2008, the machine shop will provide both lab staff and students with a complement of new and rebuilt machine tools, brand new furniture, and new wall finishes.
With the small tool replacement largely completed, the large machine tools that make up the heart of the shop are currently being overhauled or replaced. The DoAll vertical band saw and Cincinnati heavy horizontal/vertical mill are currently being overhauled at Gallery of Machines in upstate New York, with the Browne & Sharpe reciprocating grinder and Bridgeport vertical mill awaiting rebuild pending the return of the first two machines. Both the small and large lathes, as well as the 20” drill press are due to be replaced in the next few weeks.
During the machine shop renovation, the shop’s machining capabilities will be limited. Please consult with the lab management for a report on machine availability.
