Safety & Access

Access Policy

The main entrance of Carleton Laboratory is located on the first floor of Engineering Terrace at room 161. All announced visitors and deliveries may gain access by ringing the bell located at the door.

All points of access of Carleton Laboratory are guarded by the centralized Columbia University Lenel Proximo access system. Access to the laboratory is granted only to faculty and staff of the Department of Civil Engineering and Engineering Mechanics as well authorized students. Any person who has not received lab safety training must register with the lab management. "Browsing" of the lab by unannounced/unauthorized persons is strictly prohibited.

The Carleton Lab is protected by a closed circuit surveillance system.

CEEM Faculty & Staff

All Civil Engineering and Engineering Mechanics faculty and staff are granted 24/7 access through all points of entry, including the main door (161 Engineering Terrace), loading dock, and the mezzanine entrance (264 Engineering Terrace). No access application is necessary.

CEEM Students

All civil engineering students, both graduate, and undergraduate will be able to swipe into the lab's main entrance at 161 Engineering Terrace from 9:00am to 5:00pm excluding university holidays. No application is necessary.

Students who are working in the Carleton Laboratory on research projects beyond normal business hours will have to apply for access. Mezzanine access may be granted to students with offices on the mezzanine level. At least one individual of every research group must obtain a C-14 Certificate of Fitness in order to be allowed in the laboratory after hours.

All student access permissions are rescinded on 31 May of every year.

SEM Researchers

Users of the Scanning Electron Microscope in the Carleton Lab must apply for access by emailing Austin Akey. All researchers present in the lab after operating hours must obtain a C-14 Certificate of Fitness.

Visitors

Persons not directly affiliated with the Department of Civil Engineering and Engineering Mechanics or an interdepartmental research project being conducted in Carleton Lab must make an appointment and register with management upon arrival at the laboratory.

Lab Property

The carriage of lab property beyond the premises of the Carleton Lab is strictly forbidden! The use of any laboratory property outside of its walls must be authorized by management.
