Technical Program & Proceedings

The technical Program for this conference consisted of technical sessions, keynote lectures and a number of symposia. Over 400 participants from 41 countries attended EM2002.

The program for EM2002 consisted of just over 90 technical sessions spanning the broad range of topics within the engineering mechanics community. In addition to the CD-ROM proceedings provided at the conference, the proceedings are now available online.

For additional CD-ROM copies of the conference proccedings, please send an email to em2002@civil.columbia.edu. Limited additional copies will be provided at a nominal charge of $10.

  • Important Dates:

    Abstract Submission October 1, 2001
    Acceptance Notification December 15, 2001
    Paper Submission March 1, 2002
Early Registration (essential for all presentors) April 15, 2002

    Registration Fees

All presenting authors MUST register early to ensure the paper's place in the conference proceedings and a place in the technical program.

Early Registration (By April 15th, 2002):
    $375  - ASCE Members
    $425 - Non-ASCE Members
$125 - Students (includes bag, book of abstracts, CD-ROM, Coffee break snacks, but not the Icebreaker Reception or Banquet Dinner)
$ 0 - Undergraduates participating in Poster Competition (registration rate limited to first 20 applicants)

Late Registration (After April 15th, 2002):
    $425  - ASCE Members
    $475 - Non-ASCE Members
$150 - Students (includes bag, book of abstracts, CD-ROM, coffee break snacks, but not the Icebreaker Reception or Banquet Dinner)
$ 0 - Undergraduates participating in Poster Competition (registration rate limited to first 20 applicants)

Note: For this conference a rule of one paper presentation per registrant was enforced. In other words, a participant could be a co-author of several papers, but could only present a single paper.

    Accommodation

    Dormitories & Hotels
Despite New York City's reputation for high costs of accommodation, Columbia University will offer extremely reasonable air-conditioned dormitory-style accommodations for very reasonable rates. Currently the rate for a single or double room is about $80 per night. A second option priced at about $50 will also be available, and this is recommended for student participants. At past EMD conferences this type of inexpensive dormitory-style accommodation has been the most popular among participants. Alternative hotel accommodations abound in New York City, although few are within short walking distance of Columbia's Morningside Campus. Many excellent hotels exist within 15-20 minute taxi or subway rides, and these range in cost from $90 and up. If a significant number of participants choose from suggested hotels, then shuttle buses will be arranged to transfer participants for selected hotels to and from Columbia’s campus.

    Dining
The costs of the Icebreaker Reception, the Banquet Dinner, and all Refreshment Breaks (including a light continental-style breakfast) will be included in the conference registration fee for participants. An additional fee will be charged for accompanying partners to attend the Reception and the Banquet Dinner.

Again, a complete guide of recommended local restaurants will be posted on this website soon.
