After service in the U.S. Army from 1954-56 with the Armed Forces Special Weapons Project, he was on the Civil Engineering faculty from 1956 until his retirement in 1998, becoming full Professor in 1964, Chairman from 1974-78, and Carleton Professor in 1973. He was also a consultant to Weidlinger Associates from 1956 to 1998.
He was one of the first to use topology in structural analysis and to apply plastic limit analysis (on the Beineke Library of Yale University). He developed the CAP model for inelastic constitutive behavior of soils under dynamic loading and made contributions to analytical methods for acoustic and structural response of submarines and surface ships to underwater explosions.
He was a Fellow of A.S.C.E. and member of the Executive Committee and Advisory Board of its Engineering Mechanics Division from 1980-1988 and Chairman of the former in 1982-83.
He was awarded a Senior Postdoctoral Fellowship by NSF in 1962, the Great Teacher Award by Columbia in 1969, and the Mel Baron Medal by the Shock and Vibration Information and Analysis Center in 2006.
