Course Descriptions

This course integrates the advanced theory of soil mechanics with the advanced laboratory testing, including the soil element and model tests:

· Advanced theory of soil mechanics, particularly the shear strength.

· Advanced soil testing procedures employing the state-of-the-art equipments at Burmister Laboratory

· Laboratory soil element tests: direct shear, triaxial and plane strain for sand and clay (compression and extension tests with isotropic and anisotropic consolidations)

· Laboratory soil model tests: e.g., bearing capacity

The course requires extensive collaborations among the students (group work)

A final report that summarizes the results of element and model tests is required. Proper interpretation of test results is expected.

The progress of study will be checked periodically
