Academics

Requirements

Students tailor their programs to meet their interests and background, so they are free to choose from subject offerings in the engineering, management, and decision sciences within the department and from other schools and departments throughout the University.

All students, however, are encouraged to take CIEN E4129 Managing Engineering & Construction Processes and CIEN E9130 Independent Studies in Construction unless they have completed a comparable requirement at another institution or have relevant industry experience.

Master's students must complete a minimum of 30 points of approved graduate study extending over at least one academic year. Most full-time students complete the program in one academic year by taking 5 courses each semester (a course is usually worth 3 points). Part-time students generally enroll in 1 to 2 classes per semester, so they typically complete the program in 5 or 6 semesters. A thesis is not required.

Doctoral students must complete 60 points of approved study beyond the bachelor's degree, pass a qualifying examination, and prepare and defend a dissertation. More specific doctoral requirements are described in the engineering school’s bulletin. Professional degree students also complete 60 points of work, but they do not prepare a dissertation.
