Ibrahim Odeh receives Columbia Presidential Award for Outstanding Teaching

Dr. Ibrahim Odeh, the Founding Director of the Global Leaders in Construction Management (GLCM) at the Department of Civil Engineering and Engineering Mechanics, has been named a recipient of Columbia University’s Presidential Award for Outstanding Teaching. A top honor presented to only five recipients from nearly 1,000 nominations. To receive this award is a great honor, as it demonstrates commitment to excellent and often innovative teaching as recognized by the entire Columbia community.

In just seven years, Odeh novel educational program; GLCM, has already made a major impact. Students who have participated continue to speak highly of it. They laud the unique opportunity to be exposed to some of the most important and influential global infrastructure projects of our time, bridging the gap between theory and practice. A program where Odeh takes his students to learn outside the classroom and outside the country, as well as visits several global mega projects and programs in several countries around the world. The GLCM program has become a principal reason many Engineering students come to Columbia, and it epitomizes the essence of Columbia’s efforts to have an impact on the world.

Moreover, Columbia students are not the only beneficiaries of Dr. Odeh innovative educational methods. In late of 2016 Odeh introduced groundbreaking Massive Open Online Coursers (MOOCs) that are focused on the area of Construction Management. Odeh’s MOOCs currently been taken by more than 41,000 learners, opening new frontiers for students from over 180 countries with additional 400 learners weekly. His MOOCs has been ranked as one of the 2017 highest rated specializations on Coursera and also placed in the top three specializations under the Business category globally.

Odeh is a unique combination of a strategist, academic, innovator and entrepreneur. His work seamlessly merges the worlds of industry and academia, spans the global construction market, and provides leading construction firms with unique market insights and growth strategies. He is an advisory committee member at the World Economic Forum on “Future of Construction” project and an advisory board member at Financial Times in London on a similar initiative. Odeh was named Top 20 Under 40 by Engineering News Records and Top 40 Under 40 by Consulting-Specifying Engineer. He is also a member of several other advisory boards and committees such as: Smart City Works; Indus.ai; Initiafy; Columbia University Middle East Research Center; CG/LA Infrastructure; and AAAEA Tristate.

The award was presented to Odeh by University President Lee C. Bollinger at the Commencement ceremony on May 17th.
