PhD student Siwei Ma has recently been selected as the recipient of the Thornton Tomasetti Student Innovation Fellowship. The fellowship provides an award of $5,000 for a project that furthers innovation in the structural engineering and applied mechanics practice.

Siwei Ma

Siwei proposed a project to investigate the behavior of 3D printed concrete materials. 3D concrete printing offers the potential to transform the construction industry. It would eliminate the use of formwork and increase aesthetic freedom and reduce labor safety issues. However, it also presents significant materials engineering challenges, namely achieving sufficient flowability during mixing, delivery and printing, as well as shape stability of the freshly-deposited mix. This project will address this issue by developing a new cement technology to balance shape stability and workability.

Siwei received his BS degree from Shenyang Jianzhu University before coming to Columbia for his MS degree, which he received in 2014. He is completing his PhD under the advisement of Prof. Shiho Kawashima.
