Master the technical, economic, legal, and interpersonal skills essential for leading successful engineering projects from concept to completion.

Course Overview

To be an effective project manager, you need a strong foundation in engineering economics, well-developed soft skills like communication and coordination, as well as solid technical engineering expertise. A firm grasp of the legal aspects that may impact your projects and the profession more generally is also essential.

Focusing on core principles, this course will equip you to effectively manage the entire design and construction process. You will learn to develop project schedules, perform scheduling calculations, and analyze project progress using earned value management techniques. The course also covers economic analysis methods, including calculating rates of return, depreciation, and income taxes. In addition to these practical skills, you’ll explore construction contracts, negotiation strategies, and dispute resolution, while gaining a deeper understanding of labor and safety considerations.

Senior Lecturer in the Discipline of Construction Engineering and Management

A practicing academic and licensed professional engineer, , Dr Chang is currently a senior lecturer in civil engineering at Columbia University, where he teaches graduate and undergraduate courses in construction engineering and management. He is also the NY/NJ Project Controls Lead for HDR, where he oversees a staff of project controls professionals providing services in the areas of cost estimating, scheduling, document control, risk management and data analytics. Recognized for his commitment to teaching and higher education, he is the recipient of the 2017 Columbia Engineering Alumni Association (CEAA) Distinguished Faculty Teaching Award.
