Multifunctional Carbon Fibers in Civil Structures

The presentation will explore current and future trends in the development of hybrid concrete structures through the integration of carbon fibres to the cementitious matrix. Specifically, the focus will be on the advancement of carbon-based textile and fiber-reinforced concrete (TRC and FRC) elements with self-sensory capabilities. The findings are based on recent studies conducted in our laboratory. The smart sensory concept utilizes the electrical conductivity of carbon fibers for real-time monitoring. In this approach, the carbon fibers function both as the reinforcement system and as a sensory agent. Our research demonstrates the feasibility of using this concept for structural health monitoring (e.g., strain, cracks, damage) and functional monitoring (e.g., leakage, liquid infiltration). Additionally, the presentation will highlight the potential of hybrid TFRC structures and discuss the challenges that should be addressed to bring this innovative technology to practical application.
