During the Fall 2026 Art of Engineering (AoE) event, students gained hands-on experience in autonomous driving through AI-assisted algorithm development and vehicle teleoperation. In a team-based competition, students used AI coding agents to develop lane-following algorithms and tested them on scaled autonomous vehicles. Despite working toward the same goal, teams developed remarkably different solutions, which they presented and explained at the end of the event. Their ability to evaluate and refine AI-generated algorithms through real-world testing demonstrated the continued importance of technical understanding, critical thinking, and hands-on experience as AI tools rapidly evolve.
