The Urban Systems Engineering Lab team, led by visiting postdoc Dr. Jiazu Zhou, Professor Markus Schläpfer, and collaborators from Nanyang Technological University and the ETH Future Cities Laboratory, presented their paper at the 2024 IEEE ITSC conference in September.

Awarded for its innovative insight in the category ‘best application paper’, their work explores the use of mobile phone data to estimate charging demands of electric vehicles (EV) and their impacts on the power grid. Through their research, they have designed a new methodology for modeling the individual mobility patterns of EVs by leveraging anonymized large-scale mobile phone data. This new methodology allows for detailed simulations of district-level EV charging demand profiles and accurate identification of insufficient electricity grid capacities. The study contributes to the understanding of future transportation-energy systems interactions, laying the groundwork for the development of efficient EV charging strategies.

Sponsored by the Intelligent Transportation Systems Society (ITSS), the conference is one of the largest international mobility conferences, bringing together researchers, engineers and practitioners to discuss intelligent vehicles and transportation systems.

The paper will be published online next month.
